Camp Food Storage for Sanitation and Safety

One of the primary considerations in camping preparation is food storage. Here are a few camping food storage suggestions to make sure no food is wasted.

Your trusty old Ziploc bags are adequate for short backpacking trips. These plastic containers are easy to pack and come in sealable varieties. They can carry dehydrated food such as soups and pasta dishes. Although dried foods generally don’t get spoiled, the taste might get ruined if they get wet so make sure not to place food in damp areas. It is best to also put food in places that don’t get direct sunlight.

For longer camp-outs, coolers are a favourite camping food storage option. You can put ice in them to store drinks, meat, even dairy. Use dry ice for longevity but take note that these must not be used for consumption in drinks or for cooking.

It is always a good idea to include safety precautions when considering camping food storage ideas. Most outdoor equipment stores sell special food sacks that you can hang from trees to prevent bears and other animals from getting to your food. Coolers with locks are also excellent at keeping animals from raiding your supply. Using plastic bags for camping food storage safety is also viable. Just seal the bags tightly so insects won’t get into them.
