The Basics of Buying Hiking Gear

There are plenty of stores that specialize in hiking gear and they are usually the best places to go to for first time hikers.

Aside from consulting with books, guides and hiking experts, there are also plenty of hiking specialists in the stores. Often, they can not only recommend good equipment, but some even offer starter packages -a single bundle purchase that brings all the necessary hiking gear from emergency equipment to tents. A hiking gear sale often nets good finds, as some sales are often in tandem with the launch of new a line of equipment -these make for an exciting find in terms of equipment and tools.

Anyway, when buying gear for hiking, you can divide the items into various categories to make the checklists a lot more manageable.

The first category is storage. A combination of hiking bags, belt bags, utility belts and storage solutions fall under this category. The key factors to look out for are heavy duty stitching, as well as having lightweight, waterproof material. Hiking bags should naturally be large enough to carry your other items.

Another category is tools. Depending on where you are going to hike, this may simply be a simple set of hammers or for those who are going on a heavy trek, may require a complex set of climbing tools. In all cases, it pays to have tools for cooking, lighting (matches and flashlights) and of course a complete first aid kit.

In fact, you could separate the first aid kit as a completely separate category. A good kit would have bandages, gauze, antiseptic, disinfectant and some common antibiotics. Others would group in the first aid kit with a larger emergency kit that would have a radio and other ‘in-case-of-need’ resources. It’s a smart move too, since you never know if you might ever find yourself stranded on you camp site.

Of course, a tent deserves a category of its own, and choosing and buying a tent has it own set of considerations as well. Anyway, the great thing about hiking gear stores is that you never need to take a trip to different stores to get all these items and more.
