Because of the increasing popularity of camping, there now seems to be an endless array of camping gear for sale. Though nearly all of these are useful, there are some which you don’t really need. If you’re on a tight budget, you may want to pack only the camping necessities.

When you talk about camping, your first priority is always to bring along a high quality, sturdy shelter. When you’re in the wilderness, you’ll need a good tent and a sleeping bag. The tent is the most important camping gear that you need to buy, and you should get the best one that you can afford. You never know when you may encounter bad weather conditions while camping, so you better make sure that your tent can withstand strong winds and rain. If you’re pretty new to camping and are not yet familiar with the different brands, you may want to check out websites with camping gear reviews so that you’ll know which tent to buy.

A camping item that is frequently overlooked is the first-aid kit. Make sure you bring along a first-aid kit that contains more than just the usual band-aid and disinfectant. Think of all the possible camping emergencies you may experience such as poison ivy, snake bites and so on.

Other items that are considered camping necessities are a high-quality lighter, camp food, a good knife, a flashlight, a cooler for storing your food, a mobile phone that you can use in case of an emergency, a sturdy compass and a detailed map which contains useful information about your camping area. You can get all these items in nearly all camping gear stores.

There are other camping gears that are marketed as absolute necessities, but usually you don’t really need all of these. Some people call these camping luxuries as opposed to camping necessities. Such camping luxuries include air mattresses, battery-operated fans, portable showers and heaters. Although your life would be much more comfortable if you bring these along, you should remember that part of the camping experience is going without the usual home comforts.
